New non-permanent members for UN Security Council elected

altThe United Nations General Assembly elected Colombia, Germany, India, Portugal and South Africa to serve as non-permanent members of the Security Council for two-year terms starting on 1 January 2011. The newly elected countries will replace Austria, Japan, Mexico, Turkey and Uganda who's' membership expires on 31 December.
Colombia, India, and South Africa had no competitors and were elected to represent their respective areas, while Canada, Portugal and Germany contested for the two seats representing Europe and the other countries, with Germany winning the first round of votes.
